Last week, the Daily Bruin published a series on basketball in Yaoundé, Cameroon – the hometown of two UCLA basketball alumni. The on-site reporting was made possible by the Bridget O’Brien Scholarship Foundation, now in its third year of funding student journalism with a global reach and local impact.


This year’s recipients, Sugarman and Stevens, spent 31 days in Yaoundé and nearby villages listening to the stories of players, coaches and administrators involved in the game.

October 18, 2010 - We didn't report from Cameroon, but Daily Bruin senior staffers Maya Sugarman and Matt Stevens did.



Basketball is spreading from its American origins to places as distant and unknown as Yaoundé, Cameroon. Young men in the capital city grow up with dreams of playing abroad, but they don’t know what stands in their way.

A family in Cameroon shares its experience of living through the tragic loss of its son and brother, Guy Alang-Ntang

October 11, 2010 — The Daily Bruin reporting project, "An Outside Shot," includes articles, photos and multimedia capturing the basketball community in Yaoundé, Cameroon. Two former UCLA forwards, Alfred Aboya and Luc Richard Mbah a Moute, hail from the West African capital city, where basketball is gradually taking over as a top sport.

Six years ago, Yaoundé native Guy Alang-Ntang left Cameroon to play basketball at an American high school. Three years later, he suffered from a fatal heart attack on the court. Members of Alang-Ntang's family share their memories of him, and their experiences in coping with his death. [3:08]
