ORL presents NAKED, a drag fashion show, to inform about transgender community

On Feb 18, The Office of Residential Life organized NAKED, a drag fashion show, to increase transgender awareness. The models, dressed and made up as the opposite gender, reflected the way Mikaela Cullen, a second-year transgender student at UCLA feels every day.

Phi Gamma Nu tackled testicular cancer in "Balls for Balls" eating competition

"Balls for Balls" was a meatball eating competition to raise funds for the Lance Armstrong Foundation's fight against testicular cancer. Business fraternity Phi Gamma Nu collaborated with the Student Welfare Committee to host this event for the first time at UCLA on Feb. 22nd. UCLA's Phi Gamma Nu adopted the idea from another Phi Gamma Nu chapter at the University of Pennsylvania.

UCLA has seen a growth in the size of discussion sections as a result of recent budget cuts. This increase has affected both undergraduates and teaching assistants, and there is debate in regards to the severity of the change.

From seventh graders to doctorates, scholars of all ages learn new ways to think about math at the 2nd Annual Math Festival at UCLA

Math can be both frustrating and fun, and even has cultural and gender implications. Learn how with attendees of the 2nd Annual Mathematics Festival, ranging from middle school students to professional scholars. The Festival was presented by Johns Hopkins University's Center for Talented Youth and two branches of UCLA: the Philip C. Curtis Jr. Center for Mathematics and Teaching, and the Institute for Pure and Applied Mathematics.

Memorial for Black Panthers touches hearts of attendees

About 50 students and community members braved a Southern California drizzle to attend the third annual memorial service for Alprentice “Bunchy” Carter and John Huggins last Friday night. Carter and Huggins, former UCLA students and Black Panther Party members, were shot in Campbell Hall at UCLA on Jan. 17, 1969.

UCLA Opera production modernizes the 17th century Italian classic, "Giasone"

Love the one you’re with, or kill her to run off with your latest affair? “Giasone” is a comedic Venetian opera about love, sex, ultimate betrayal, murder and living happily ever after. Schoenberg Music Building will host the West Coast premiere of “Giasone” by Francisco Cavalli, directed by Peter Kazaras and conducted by Stephen Stubbs, starring Nick Zammit and Lauren Edwards as Jason.

National theater project "Refugee Nation" comes to UCLA, highlighting issues facing Laotian refugees and their descendants

The Laotian American Organization at UCLA hosts "Refugee Nation" at 7:30 p.m. in Ackerman Grand Ballroom on Feb. 1. Written and performed by Ova Saopeng and Leilani Chan of TeAda Productions, the performance encompasses music, video, drama and dance to illustrate the experiences of Laotians who, during the mid 1960s to '70s, fled to the U.S. to escape the armed conflict in Laos that was part of the Vietnam War. That generation remains pained by the past, and the show aims to help today’s youth to understand this complex history [4:25].
