Today, we’re honoring the Daily Bruin’s Book Week. Anne Koch, who graduated from UCLA in 1969, has witnessed what she sees as the diminishing role of books, especially in today’s digital age. She calls attention to their ability to spark the imagination through her collection of essays, “It’s All About the Story – Composing a Life in Books.” Fourth-year English and art student Latoya Raveneau is working on her poetry thesis. She talks about how conventional plot lines take a backseat as the words and images take on a dynamic life of their own. Alumnus Derek Taylor Kent has woven a magical and horrific children’s narrative, “Scary School” He shares how his imagination brought this cast of monsters and regular kids together.

Oct. 24, 2011 — Inspired by the late political activist Professor Victor Wolfenstein, political science Professor Michael Chwe pitched a tent at the Occupy L.A.. Chwe discusses honoring Wolfenstein’s memory at this movement.

Then program manager Melanie Gideon shares the mission of Operation Mend, a joint effort between the Ronald Reagan UCLA Medical Center, the Brooke Army Medical Center in San Antonio, Texas, and the Veterans Association Greater Los Angeles Healthcare System. The project provides care for soldiers who were severely wounded or disfigured in Iraq and Afghanistan, such as retired Army Sergeant First Class Michael Schlitz.

Finally, self-proclaimed “black journalista” and recent author of “Black Talk, Blue Thoughts, and Walking the Color Line: Dispatches from a Black Journalista,” Erin Aubry Kaplan calls in. The UCLA alumna discusses her title and her journey as an author and a potent voice of the black community.

October 10, 2011 - Chronic respiratory problems hitting large populations in Los Angeles have puzzled doctors and scientists such as Dr. Andre Nel. He calls in to discuss the research leading up to the discovery of dangerous ultrafine particles spewing from our exhaust pipes. Also, rising sea levels in the central Pacific Ocean are threatening to flood the island nations of Kiribati, Tokelau and Tuvalu. A troupe of 36 dancers and singers from the threatened islands will embark upon a tour across America, including a performance at Royce Hall this Saturday to record their legacy. UCLA emerita Professor Judy Mitoma, who is producing the dance show, tells us who these people are and the message they wish to convey. While they enlighten us as to what’s happening in the outside world, our in-house love guru Matt Lee takes us inside ourselves by examining one of the strongest forces of nature – love.

Talented Bruins put on Dream's Talent Show to support undocumented students

May 2, 2011 - The DREAM Act, or the Development, Relief and Education for Alien Minors Act, is a much-debated piece of legislation that would provide a pathway for undocumented students to gain citizenship and pursue higher education. Last week, undocumented and documented students alike hosted a talent show to raise funds for the campus group IDEAS at UCLA, which works as a support system for undocumented students. Research psychologist and former monk Lobsang Rapgay talks about how Buddhist concepts relate to neuroscience research

May 3, 2011 – A recent symposium on campus about Buddhism and neuroscience included a roster of UCLA researchers. Among the participants was longtime student of the brain and Buddhist spirituality, research psychologist Lobsang Rapgay.
Rapgay is the director of the Clinical Training program for Mental Health Professionals at the Mindfulness Awareness Research Center at UCLA. He spoke with the Daily Bruin's Alex Chen about his life as a former monk and deputy secretary for His Holiness the Dalai Lama as well as how Buddhist concepts are being applied to neuroscience research. Tiffany Lua talks about her start in golf, her current experience on the women's golf team and her plans for the future

May 4, 2011 - Sophomore golfer Tiffany Lua is the up-and-coming star of UCLA's women's golf team. Although younger than many of her teammates, Lua has proven she has what it takes to be a great golfer. It is still early in her career, but it seems that Lua is ahead of the cut. [1:24]

Dr. Demento made his way back to the UCLA campus Saturday as a guest DJ for the Hollywood Movie Magic Ball hosted by the Ballroom Dance Club. For a generation of college students, the question is, “Where were you on Sept. 11, 2001?” For older generations, there is the death of John F. Kennedy, the bombing of Pearl Harbor. Long Story Short: Student will Teach for America as the first stepping stone to her future career

Grace Lim, a fourth-year studying political science and history, joins the Teach for America workforce this summer, devoting the next two years to teaching underprivileged children. Her passion for education stems from personal experiences, and Lim hopes to get teaching experience before pursuing education reform. Leaving for Baltimore after graduation, Lim plans to teach elementary school kids English as a second language.

Doctoral student Steven Kapp shares his experience of living with Asperger's syndrome

February 23, 2011 – Steven Kapp is a doctoral student in psychological studies in education who also happens to have Asperger’s syndrome.

The American Psychiatric Association is considering subsuming this diagnosis under “Autism Spectrum Disorder.” Kapp spoke about living with his Asperger’s diagnosis as a strength rather than as a weakness.

Long Story Short: Alumna reflects on her time at hospital in her homeland of Afghanistan

UCLA alumna Sayeda Fazel recently returned to Afghanistan for the first time in 15 years. Fazel has pre-med ambitions, so she volunteered at a hospital near her home. College StarLeague battles it out in the cosmos of Starcraft II

February 2, 2011 - The Collegiate StarLeague brings together teams from 144 universities and junior colleges to battle each other in the videogame, StarCraft II. For the uninitiated, or “noobs,” to use videogame lingo, StarCraft II is a sci-fi real-time strategy game that was released in July. UCLA’s team recently started its second season in the league and competes every Saturday. Rachel Garcia reports. [2:43]

Long Story Short: A look at the controversy surrounding the $50 million donation to replace the Faculty Center

The biggest news last week was a $100 million donation to UCLA from alumni Meyer and Renee Luskin. Half of that amount will go to the UCLA School of Public Affairs. Chairs object to proposal to merge foreign language departments

January 4, 2011 - Administrators are proposing to merge six foreign language departments into a new, and very big, department of European Languages and Cultures. The affected departments would be French and Francophone Studies, Spanish and Portuguese, Slavic Languages and Literatures, Scandinavian, Italian, and Germanic Languages.
