Parapsychologist Barry Taff once worked at UCLA’s former parapsychology lab. He studied the alleged presence of ghosts, poltergeists and extrasensory perception. This has culminated in a book, “Aliens Above, Ghosts Below.” He joins us to talk about his experiences and the theories that support the paranormal.

Later, we preview the upcoming fall issue of the Daily Bruin’s quarterly lifestyle and news magazine, Prime. Editors Samantha Suchland and Ken Huang give us a sneak peek before it hits newsstands on Tuesday. They will take us behind the scenes of the creation of the magazine, as well as the people and things they chose to highlight.

Oct. 24, 2011 — Inspired by the late political activist Professor Victor Wolfenstein, political science Professor Michael Chwe pitched a tent at the Occupy L.A.. Chwe discusses honoring Wolfenstein’s memory at this movement.

Then program manager Melanie Gideon shares the mission of Operation Mend, a joint effort between the Ronald Reagan UCLA Medical Center, the Brooke Army Medical Center in San Antonio, Texas, and the Veterans Association Greater Los Angeles Healthcare System. The project provides care for soldiers who were severely wounded or disfigured in Iraq and Afghanistan, such as retired Army Sergeant First Class Michael Schlitz.

Finally, self-proclaimed “black journalista” and recent author of “Black Talk, Blue Thoughts, and Walking the Color Line: Dispatches from a Black Journalista,” Erin Aubry Kaplan calls in. The UCLA alumna discusses her title and her journey as an author and a potent voice of the black community.

Long Story Short: October 10, 2011

October 10, 2011 - Chronic respiratory problems hitting large populations in Los Angeles have puzzled doctors and scientists such as Dr. Andre Nel. He calls in to discuss the research leading up to the discovery of dangerous ultrafine particles spewing from our exhaust pipes. Also, rising sea levels in the central Pacific Ocean are threatening to flood the island nations of Kiribati, Tokelau and Tuvalu. A troupe of 36 dancers and singers from the threatened islands will embark upon a tour across America, including a performance at Royce Hall this Saturday to record their legacy. UCLA emerita Professor Judy Mitoma, who is producing the dance show, tells us who these people are and the message they wish to convey. While they enlighten us as to what’s happening in the outside world, our in-house love guru Matt Lee takes us inside ourselves by examining one of the strongest forces of nature – love.

Oct. 10, 2011 — This week on Overtime, Daily Bruin Sports senior staff Sam Strong and Ryan Eshoff return to the airwaves to chat about UCLA's 28-25 win over Washington State. The Bruins are now 2-1 in the Pac-12, with a much-needed bye week coming up.
The guys will be joined by quarterback Richard Brehaut to talk UCLA football. Some technical difficulties with the phone line prevented him from getting through to the hosts last week. Those kinks have been worked out and he finally makes it on the show this week.

She reviews two new albums that are about to hit the market -- Joe Jonas’ solo album, “Fastlife,” as well as Jack’s Mannequin’s “People and Things.” Later, UCLA School of Law Professor Asli Bali and Middle Eastern history Professor James Gelvin hone in on a topic that is making headlines in the international arena – the civil war in Libya. They discuss the intersection between politics and human rights issues that resulted in two groups clashing over control of Libya.
