Fee hikes ultimately seen as result of reduced fund support from state

Sex ed revamped: squad educates teens on STDs through music

Nov. 29, 2010 – Now in its second year, the UCLA Sex Squad travels to high schools throughout Los Angeles performing skits, songs and dances about HIV, AIDS and sex. Students blend at newly established Turkish Student Association's game night

In Turkey, European and Middle Eastern styles and ideas mingle, but for whatever reason, people don't seem to know very much about it. A family in Cameroon shares its experience of living through the tragic loss of its son and brother, Guy Alang-Ntang

October 11, 2010 — The Daily Bruin reporting project, "An Outside Shot," includes articles, photos and multimedia capturing the basketball community in Yaoundé, Cameroon. Two former UCLA forwards, Alfred Aboya and Luc Richard Mbah a Moute, hail from the West African capital city, where basketball is gradually taking over as a top sport.

Six years ago, Yaoundé native Guy Alang-Ntang left Cameroon to play basketball at an American high school. Three years later, he suffered from a fatal heart attack on the court. Members of Alang-Ntang's family share their memories of him, and their experiences in coping with his death. [3:08]

Ball kids support big-name tennis players in Farmers Classic

Six ball kids rotate to support the players by running after loose tennis balls. Matt Logue creates a metropolis without traffic or people in 'Empty L.A.


June 28, 2010 - After getting back from assignment in New Zealand, special effects artist Matt Logue felt overwhelmed when he returned to the drudgery of Los Angeles traffic. So he decided to do something about it: erase the traffic. In a four-year project, Logue took pictures of both famous and unknown parts of LA and painstakingly removed every person and moving car. When he was done, he had an “Empty L.A.,” the title of the book he released last fall. Logue spoke with Daily Bruin Radio about the process. [5:08]

8-clap honors Wooden on June 4, 2010

Students organized an 8-clap at UCLA’s Ackerman Plaza at noon Saturday. About 200 students attended, and then about three times as many Bruins gathered at night outside the UCLA Ronald Reagan Medical Center for a Nation-Wide 8-clap and candle-light vigil to show their support for former UCLA Men’s Basketball Coach John Wooden and his family. Violinist Ji Young An to perform a solo at conductorless UCLA Camarades Ensemble's first concert

April 27, 2010 - April 24 marked the 95th anniversary of the Armenian Genocide. The El Rey Theater hosted a benefit concert called “Silence the Lies: Rock the Truth”, which aimed to raise awareness about the 1.5 million Armenians who perished in the first genocide of the 20th century. The biking culture in Los Angeles is relatively unknown to most Angelenos. But on April 8, the Hammer Museum celebrated all things bicycle at the second-annual Bike Night. Phi Gamma Nu tackled testicular cancer in "Balls for Balls" eating competition

"Balls for Balls" was a meatball eating competition to raise funds for the Lance Armstrong Foundation's fight against testicular cancer. Business fraternity Phi Gamma Nu collaborated with the Student Welfare Committee to host this event for the first time at UCLA on Feb. 22nd. UCLA's Phi Gamma Nu adopted the idea from another Phi Gamma Nu chapter at the University of Pennsylvania.

National theater project "Refugee Nation" comes to UCLA, highlighting issues facing Laotian refugees and their descendants

The Laotian American Organization at UCLA hosts "Refugee Nation" at 7:30 p.m. in Ackerman Grand Ballroom on Feb. 1. Written and performed by Ova Saopeng and Leilani Chan of TeAda Productions, the performance encompasses music, video, drama and dance to illustrate the experiences of Laotians who, during the mid 1960s to '70s, fled to the U.S. to escape the armed conflict in Laos that was part of the Vietnam War. That generation remains pained by the past, and the show aims to help today’s youth to understand this complex history [4:25].

Uptick in Consumer Confidence may Herald Recovery

2009 was accompanied by one of the biggest losses in U.S. stock market history. The economy seemed to be stuck in a rut, with bank bailouts and plummeting stock indexes.
